Vegan Eats in Toronto 2 (Part 2)

Continuing on from my last post about my recent trip to Toronto.

After the Farmers’ Market we went to Fresh for lunch with a friend. I usually get the Magic Tofu wrap but I decided to try something new. I had the Pesto Grilled Vegetable wrap. It was really good but not as good as the Magic Tofu!

After that we headed down to Panacea, the all vegan shop in Toronto, to stock up on vegan junk. Go Max Go has two new candy bars, a crispy rice bar and peanut butter cups. So far I’ve only tried the peanut butter cups, and they were amazing! Panacea also had vegan cola gummies!!!!! I’m not the only one who finds this ridiculously exciting am I?

That night our friend Camille who we were staying with had invited a bunch of her vegan friends over for a potluck. Not only were they an incredibly interesting, entertaining and welcoming group of people, but they can also cook! The food was great, a Mexican dip and soba noodle salad were my fav main dishes and the key lime pie and chocolate cake topped the desserts.

Sunday we went to Hot Beans in the Kensington Market. I have been dying to go to Hot Beans for awhile now. Vegan Mexican food and donuts…what a perfect combination. Not to mention that I’ve been craving donuts bad for like a year now. Sadly, there were out of donuts when we got there. Let this be a lesson to you, make sure you go to Hot Beans early in the day or give them a call to put some aside for you! Both Camille and Dave had the TVP Burrito. I had the tacos, one with TVP and one with jackfruit. The TVP was not a crumble like I was expecting, the texture was more like small pieces of fried steak. The jackfruit was yummy, coated in a sort of sweet and tangy sauce. I think the TVP burrito, which is their most popular menu item, was definitely the best.

Sadie’s Diner has actually opened up a vegan ice cream shop right next to Hot Beans so you can get some ice cream for dessert.

Since Hot Beans was out of donuts we went for gelato after. Camile had heard that Hotel Gelato had a lot of vegan options so we went there. It turns out they also have a ton of vegan baked goods from Sweets from the Earth and LPK  (including those amazing peanut butter naniomo bars). In addition to many fruit flavors, they also had a soy chocolate flavor gelato. The gelato itself was some of the best I’ve had. Hotel Gelato also had a great atmosphere and would be the perfect place to go for coffee and dessert.

Monday morning we finished off our trip with brunch at Fresh. It was really hard to decide if we should try somewhere new or head back to Fresh which we knew from our last trip has awesome brunch. Fresh just changed their menu and one of the new features is that their pancakes are now gluten free. This is great for the gf folks out there but, sadly, the pancakes were definitely not as good as they used to be. I don’t know why they don’t just offer both types. Also new on the menu is the tempeh bacon, it was good but the serving size was way smaller than the sausage so I will probably go with the sausage next time.

Vegan Eats in Toronto 2 (Part 1)

I just got back from a great weekend in Toronto. Amazing food and awesome people made for a perfect weekend. We ate at a few new vegan restaurants and the food was out of this world.

You can see my last trip to TO here.

With so many new vegan food places opening we didn’t even get a chance to go back to most of our old favorites.

We drove down from Ottawa on Friday and literally went straight to The Hogtown Vegan when we got into town. The place was packed and we had to wait over 30 minutes for a table. But it was well worth the wait! We started with the Fries Supremacy. Thin, crispy fries topped with nacho cheese sauce and cashew sour cream. These were AMAZING! Possibly the yummiest thing I’ve ever eaten. For my main dish I had the ‘Chicken’ and Waffles. Battered and fried vegetarian chicken served over fresh waffles covered in a maple butter sauce. I was worried that having waffles with dinner would be weird, but nope, just tasty! Dave had the ‘Sausage’ and Biscuit Sliders. They were also delicious.

For dessert we walked a few blocks to Sweet Fantasies (Bloor and Brunswick). They have 2 flavors of Tofutti ice cream and vegan waffles cones. Tofutti is definitely not my favorite vegan ice cream, but it is worth it just for the waffle cone!

On Saturday morning we went to the Brick Works Farmer’s Market. Our plan of grabbing some fruit for a healthy breakfast was quickly thwarted when we spotted LPK’s table. They table was brimming with vegan goodies and they were frying up fresh vegan sweet potato donut holes dusted in maple sugar and cinnamon! We tried the donuts, peanut butter nanimo bar and oreo style cookies. All were amazing but the peanut butter nanimo bar stole the show. There were a few other vegan friendly vendors including Ying Ying soy foods and someone selling raw chocolate.

Donuts!!!

Look for part 2 later this week including Hot Beans!

Vegan eats in Toronto

I went to Toronto this weekend to see Wicked. It was one of the few times that I’ve been in Toronto just for fun. Usually I’m there for conferences or meetings and don’t have much time to explore (a.k.a. find yummy vegan food!).

We started Saturday with brunch at Fresh. Fresh is one of my favorite restaurants in Toronto. The atmosphere is great and the food is simple, delicious and unpretentious. This was my first time going there for brunch. There aren’t a lot of options. A few different types of pancakes, pancake platter with pancakes, scrambled tofu and veggie sausage and granola parfaits. I had the blueberry almond pancakes. I’m glad I only got the double because these were big pancakes! Dave got the pancake platter with blueberry pancakes. These pancakes were amazing. I loved the added crunch from the almonds. Dave thought the tofu was only OK but loved the sausage.

Then we strolled around the Kensington Market for awhile and stopped at Hibiscus for some vegan ice cream. I had chocolate almond and chocolate brownie. Dave had coconut mango and coconut blueberry. The fruity flavors are made with coconut milk. Apparently all the other flavors are made with mung bean milk. The chocolate flavors were both really good but the coconut blueberry really stole the show. With hints of cinnamon it tasted just like blueberry pie.

We went to Fressen for a nice dinner before the show. I don’t have any pictures because I didn’t want to lug my camera. Honestly, this was one of the best meals I have ever had. We ordered the black bean seitan steaks and the beer battered tofu. They were both amazing. The seitan steak was a little spicy for my tastes, but the texture was amazing. The tofu was more like a tofu ricotta rather than a piece of tofu like I was expecting and it was coated in a super thick, crispy batter. The greens, veggies and fingerling potatoes that accompanied the main dish were equally amazing. They only had one dessert which was a dense, truffle like flourless chocolate cake. All in all, Fressen is now one of my new favorite vegan restaurants!

Sunday we went back to Fresh for lunch. We started with the quinoa battered onion rings. Sadly, these weren’t as good as the last time I had them. The onion seemed undercooked or something. Then I had the magic tofu wrap which is my favorite of their lunch offerings. I had their flourless cashew cookie to go, it was heavenly.

Then a few hours before getting on the train back to Ottawa, we went to Poutini’s to get a vegan poutine. I was a little scared because, despite living in Canada my whole life, I had never had a poutine before and the thought of fries covered in gravy didn’t sound all that appealing. But of course, I had to try it. Well, I now know what all the fuss is about! I thought it was great and Dave, who has had many, many poutines before, really liked it as well. And, all of the cups and forks at Poutini’s are compostable.

Sadly, this was all the eating I was able to fit into two days. Some of my other Toronto favorites are Live and The Magic Oven. Any suggestions for where I should go on my next visit to Toronto?
